Zoning Meeting or Holy War? Broken Arrow Picks a Side
A proposed mosque, a four-hour panic session, and a masterclass in saying “this isn’t Islamophobia” while doing exactly that.
A Muslim community in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma spent years raising money, bought land, and followed the process to build a mosque and a small retail center.
City staff reviewed it. Approved.
Planning commission reviewed it. Approved.
Then the public showed up like it was opening night for FearFest 2026.
Over 1,000 people packed a four-hour meeting. The result? Denied, 4–1.
Because nothing says “efficient local government” like ignoring your own experts after a crowd watches three Facebook videos and feels something.
When Zoning Turned Into a Netflix Thriller
At first, we had the classics. Traffic. Water flow. Business access.
Then the plot twist hit.
Suddenly, the mosque was going to:
Harbor terrorists
Launch an “incursion of Islam”
Violate noise ordinances with calls to prayer
Lower property values
And, my personal favorite, lead to beheadings
Ah yes. The slippery slope.
First it’s a parking lot… next thing you know, medieval execution scenes in suburban Oklahoma.
Totally linear progression. Happens all the time.
“Islam Doesn’t Play Well With Others”
One gentleman offered this gem:
“Islam doesn’t play well with others… I oppose a mosque anywhere in America.”
Strong take.
Even stronger considering he delivered it at a meeting where 1,000 people gathered specifically to prevent their neighbors from building a place to worship.
That’s like setting a house on fire and yelling, “These people have no respect for property!”
Monk voice, now with raised eyebrow:
Projection. It’s not just a psychological defense. It’s a community activity.
This Is Definitely Not Islamophobia
Officials reassured everyone:
“This decision is not based on racism or Islamophobia.”
Of course not.
It’s based on:
Widespread fear of terrorism
Claims of cultural takeover
Social media panic
An investigation launched right on cue during political season
But Islamophobia? No no. That would be rude.
Virgin Monk Boy adjusts his invisible glasses:
“Blessed are those who smell smoke and insist the fire is just ‘concern.’”
Meanwhile, Back in Reality
Muslim residents showed up too.
Doctors. Business owners. Families.
One man shared his ancestor fought in the Revolutionary War. Others talked about contributing to their community and simply needing space to pray.
Which, last time I checked, is still allowed under that little document everyone keeps quoting when it’s convenient.
You know the one.
The Part Nobody Wants to Say Out Loud
If this were a church, this meeting would’ve been over before someone finished saying “potluck.”
But change one word to “mosque,” and suddenly:
Everyone becomes a counterterrorism expert
Zoning becomes national defense
And prayer becomes a suspicious activity
It’s amazing how fast freedom gets rebranded when it has an accent.
Final Word from the Monastery (Now With Studio Audience Applause)
Fear doesn’t walk in and say, “Hello, I’m fear.”
It walks in wearing a blazer and says, “I just have some concerns.”
And then it votes.
Virgin Monk Boy closes the scroll:
“Blessed are those who defend religious liberty… right up until it belongs to someone else.”

What are the chances of the media "shining light" on this travesty?
That's really sad. It's too bad those community members can't get to know their neighbors. I think, if they did, their fear would go away.
