Reminding me of a poem by William Stafford: The Way It Is

There’s a thread you follow. It goes among

things that change. But it doesn’t change.

People wonder about what you are pursuing.

You have to explain about the thread.

But it is hard for others to see.

While you hold it you can’t get lost.

Tragedies happen; people get hurt

or die; and you suffer and get old.

Nothing you do can stop time’s unfolding.

You don’t ever let go of the thread.

How in the world did you become so wise, and gentle, and funny? As always, I am moved and challenged by your wisdom. Cindy

Thank you for the framing. Piercing the essence. Some eternal truths I have already learned through life’s hardships, but still so much to unpack and so much to work towards.

So beautiful, so timely, and yes, the fire doth burn! Having recently discovered issues of a survival nature (mishandling fiduciary issue)...the machine went full throttle into all that you have mentioned here. And actions needed to take place. I had to honor the fire, the reaction, and did so in writing, giving it a place to be held, the fears, the rage, the tears, the grief, the powerlessness. And, I know it is not over..more opportunities to come. I'll save this one.

Thank you for this! When I touched the comment button, I wanted to tell the story of what happened yesterday that triggered several memories of things I am still working through 65+ and 30 years later. I sat with all of it through the afternoon, evening and this morning. Your writing is so timely to remind me that some things need silence and feeling and the space to be. An insightful friend has taught me that “but” sometimes is “and”; I saw that as I read…

“which is rude, and consistent.”
