Out of the 12-Step world we get the saying "Feelings aren't facts." And, we are invited to, maybe, set a 15 minute timervand just sit in our "dis-ease."
In other languages, it isn't possible to say I am sad. I think of my high-school French classes. That would mean that I am the persona of sadness. One always has sadness or hunger. It is English that allows us to confuse what we might "have" with what we "are."
Thank you for this important lesson and distinction today. Most of us never really listen to ourselves. Verbs are action words, as we were all taught in school. Again, most of us never realize that they actually activate what we say. This part of us is God-like in relation to creativity, as we all are part of God. To make ourselves into our moods is NOT to our benefits. So, it definitely IS important to make the feeling distinctions. 😊 Perhaps the real problem is that most of us were never taught that we bring into being what we say.
This might be the most important teaching there is. Especially the urgency vs patience being played out in the world. Apparently emotional waves last only 90 seconds! Thanks for the practical strategies especially I am.
I wish i had read this when i was in junior high school. And every morning when i got up until it sunk in & actually remembered to practice it. This may be the most important - searching for a word, lesson, discovery - how bout just truth I’ve ever read in terms of how i have lived my life until recently. My emotions ran it & yes, all of my 3 jobs i had that i loved & adored had me in front of the public & i truly believed diving deeply into my emotional swimming pool until i climbed out, then dove into the deep end again was the most creative way to be - FEEL, EMBRACE, BE THOSE EMOTIONS. A blessing of being forced to have long quiet time at home when all those emotional creatures just ran amuck & I had to learn how to “manage” them. That didnt work of course but every sentence in what you wrote i want slapped on the wall of the rooms of my house so I’ll see them every day (hate to sound like a delirious fawning groupie but needing to read this daily is the excited emotion I’m feeling right now).
This is the most beautiful playbook on those squirrely things we call “emotions” for someone who has given them power over everything in my life for decades, with some rare vacations in between due to a book I read or a retreat i went to.
Might just be a lifesaver for the rest of my life. Practice begins now. Just heard the starting pistol. Still need more coffee tho. 😉 thanks 😌
In reference to the response before my above one, I just want to say that “I am” is who God is. When we simply say, “I am,” we are acknowledging the God in us. It is the part of us that is capable.

“I am” - presence perfect.
I like what you pointed out of the difference between 'I feel' and 'I am.' That is something I need to watch with my self talk.

I recognize so much in this piece!!
“I feel angry” is an observation. “I am angry” is an identity claim. The first allows space. The second collapses it.
This is a huge awakening.

One of my favorite meditations is to silently think "I" on the inbreath, then "Am" on the out breath
This was a read through twice. I like the differentiation between "I feel" and "I am". That is a great linguistic change. Will work on that.
I also like the "I am" as total response...I love Bruteau.
But the best is naming it Equanimity as stabilization. That is the best word for it is have seen used. The tie in with Paul's words is great.
The moving toward that peace is encouraging.
