She never fled. She was there at the cross, the tomb, and the resurrection. Every Gospel says so. So why is Mary Magdalene missing from our liturgies, our artwork, our memory?
Both, Mary Magdalene and Mother Mary were taken out of their true power - the power of woman’s heart, her way of perception. One was made small, the other put on pedestal that’s golden cage. Why? Because that power of the feminine, that love, that wholeness of Mother and Lover, heart and womb, makes us whole and so, not controllable. The whole Christian history evolves around suppressing that and controlling hearts and minds, making Christianity a religion of fear, more than love. Thank you for writing about it!
From the teachings & companionship of Jesus, Mary gained deep inner knowing. She knew that although his human life had ended, his spiritual life was eternal, so she waited because she knew she would see him again. Jesus reassured her by appearing to her again, & his Resurrection assured everyone that there is more to reality than a human life. 🌅
I just cracked the book! So cool. I'm studying shamanism, and the whole “seeing with the eyes of the heart” thing is part of the curriculum, and a major initiation. It's just astonishing to me how so many traditions lead straight back to Source.
Yes, dear Morgan, I’ve read The Madonna Secret. I’ve also sipped from the wild chalice that is Karen King’s The Gospel of Mary of Magdala: Jesus and the First Woman Apostle. It's not fiction, but it reads like a revelation that fell out of the canonical canon like a drunk angel at a Vatican banquet.
Sophie Strand’s Madonna Secret is mythopoetic midrash, Magdalene fanfic of the highest mystical order. Karen King’s book, by contrast, is grounded in the actual fragments of the Gospel of Mary discovered in the sands of Egypt. This is where the Church’s cover story collapses in the face of Mary teaching the real teachings. These are the ones too spicy for empire and too empowering for patriarchy.
If The Madonna Secret gives us Mary as visionary wild woman, The Gospel of Mary of Magdala gives us Mary as spiritual authority. She is not Jesus’ shadow. She is his mirror. She is not his helpmeet. She is his heir.
Both are worth devouring. Only one makes bishops sweat through their silk robes.
Oh hell yeah. I appreciate the reference. I read another Magdalene book that was underwhelming. Can't remember who the author was. But that sounds cool.

Yes, Karen. So beautifully said.
🙏May God bless you with many students!
I know what it is to be erased. I see her.
The missing years
