live.

When food, drink, and ordinary comforts are set aside during daylight hours, something subtle happens. The body maintains its rhythms, but previously unnoticed habits become apparent. Hunger appears. Irritation appears. Restlessness appears. Moments of unexpected quiet appear as well.

Fasting does not create these states. It makes them visible.

In the contemplative traditions of Islam, Ramadan is understood as a month of remembrance. Rather than trying to control the mind or perfect behavior, one learns to return again to awareness through the Divine Names — sacred qualities that describe how mercy, patience, life, and illumination move through existence itself.

A Divine Name is not a mantra used to escape experience. It is a way of meeting experience more fully. The Name gently reminds the heart of a quality already present within reality and, therefore, already present within us.

This guide offers a way of living Ramadan through several of these Names, allowing the fast itself to become a teacher.

Critique their behavior. Feel the subtle heat of righteousness rising in our chest.

But two ancient teachings—one from Jesus, the other from Tibetan mind training—ask the same piercing question:

What if the problem isn’t out there?

✨ Gospel of Thomas, Logion 26:

“You see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but you do not see the beam that is in your own eye.”

🧠 Lojong slogan #12:

“Drive all blames into one.”

At first glance, these seem like separate paths. One is Christian, the other Buddhist.
But they’re both doing divine surgery on the ego’s favorite pastime: projection.

Subscribe now

🔎 The Gospel teaching says:

You’re judging someone else’s speck because it echoes something in you.
The problem isn’t their flaw—it’s your blindness.
Only when you’ve removed your own beam can you see clearly enough to offer anything resembling help.

🪬 The Lojong slogan says:

Take all the blame—yes, all of it—and gather it into one: your self-cherishing mind.
It’s not about guilt.
It’s about waking up to the illusion that everyone else is the problem.
Suffering multiplies when we keep outsourcing the cause.

🪞 But here’s what hit me today:

Reading Logion 26 again, I saw it not just as a rebuke against judging others…
but as a mirror of the subconscious.

Everything I notice in others—especially what offends me—is something unresolved in me.
The beam isn’t just blocking my sight. It’s projecting the whole damn slideshow.

So what’s the remedy?

Bless the ones who irritate you.
Pray for the ones who trigger you.
Wish love for the ones your ego wants to exile.

Because the moment I choose to love them,
I begin to love the part of myself I once disowned.

This isn’t a guilt trip. It’s spiritual aikido.
It doesn’t mean you abandon boundaries or ignore harm.
It means you respond from clarity—not from the wounded place that wants to project pain outward.

When you gather the blame and pull out the beam,
you’re not collapsing into shame.
You’re reclaiming your vision.

And from that vision, compassion isn’t just a virtue.
It’s the natural light of someone who finally sees.

🙏
If you're fumbling today—blaming, bracing, judging—
bless it.

Then turn inward, First thing I see when I check my feed? A video of a former fundamentalist drummer back in his worship band days. Full production. Drums pounding. Arms raised. It looked more like a political rally than anything to do with love or God.

And it reminded me: this was part of the plan.

The Virgin Monk Boy Scrolls is a reader-supported publication. Its theological scaffolding goes back decades—centuries, even. But one of the most effective tools it used to grip the American imagination wasn’t a sermon or a textbook. It was music.

Modern worship music didn’t create Christian Nationalism, but it laid the emotional groundwork. It trained people to crave a God who dominates. A God who wins. A God whose presence is measured in goosebumps and guitar solos—and whose enemies are always conveniently the same people your political party doesn’t like.

You don’t get addicted to authoritarian religion by reading a manifesto. You get addicted by singing the same story over and over until it becomes your nervous system.

We went from “be still and know” to “take the hill for Jesus” without even noticing the shift.

The Worship Wars Weren’t About Music Style

Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, the so-called "worship wars" framed the conversation as a generational fight over musical style—hymns vs. guitars, pews vs. fog machines.

But the real battle was spiritual. It was about how we understand God.

When the dominant energy of worship becomes militant—lyrics about victory, chord progressions designed to induce emotional climax, bridge after bridge calling us to rise up and conquer—we’re no longer just singing. We’re being shaped.

And what are we being shaped for?

Not love. Not humility. Not the long, slow transformation of the soul.

We’re being shaped for allegiance. For certainty. For spiritualized nationalism that sees the world as a battleground instead of a beloved community.

Worship as Performance, Not Presence

Let’s be honest: the megachurch stage often looks indistinguishable from a political convention. Flashing lights. Branded backdrops. Hype teams working the crowd. That isn’t worship. That’s programming.

It’s emotional architecture designed to bypass your critical thinking and drive you into groupthink. And when you’ve been conditioned by this week after week, year after year, is it any wonder you start to believe God has an opinion about who should be president, or what books your neighbor’s kid is allowed to read?

We built a generation of believers who confuse intensity with truth, and volume with authority.

What We Lost in the Noise

We lost the God who whispers.

We lost the Christ who weeps.

We lost the Spirit that descends not in fire, but in a dove.

In chasing relevance, we sacrificed reverence. And into that vacuum stepped something far more dangerous than drums and distortion: a gospel of domination.

Christian Nationalism didn’t need theology textbooks. It just needed a good playlist.

But Wait—What If You Still Love Worship Music?

Now, don’t get me wrong—this isn’t about saying guitars are bad or drums are dangerous. Music is powerful. It can shake your soul awake, crack your heart open, and yes, even be a channel for deep, divine presence. I’ve been there. Some of us still are.

This isn’t about style. It’s about spirit.

You can rock out in full surrender to Love, or you can rock out to rally the troops. The question isn’t what kind of music you’re playing—it’s what kind of energy you’re reinforcing.

If the songs leave no room for grief, for nuance, for lament, for transformation that doesn’t involve “winning” or “rising up” or “taking the land”—then maybe we need to ask harder questions.

Christian Nationalism isn’t always loud and obvious. Sometimes it hums in the background, beneath the lyrics, shaping how we think about power, belonging, and who’s really on “God’s side.”

And yeah, that can be hard to own—especially when the songs brought you comfort. Especially when they carried you through seasons of genuine faith.

But love asks more of us. It asks us to go deeper than what felt good in the moment. It asks us to interrogate the fruit. And if the fruit of the music you were formed by ends up looking more like conquest than compassion… then maybe it's time to change the station.

What Happens Next?

Some of us left. Some of us stayed and quietly unplugged the fog machine. Some of us found God in silence again—in candles, in the breath, in awkwardly off-key gatherings where nobody’s trying to “slay in the Spirit.”

If you’ve felt it too—that subtle shift from praise to propaganda—you’re not crazy. You’re awake.

And maybe it’s not about writing new songs.

Maybe it’s about remembering the ones that don’t serve empire. The ones that make space for tears. For silence. For the kind of Presence that doesn’t need to prove anything.

There’s a new kind of psalmody emerging—one that doesn’t try to stir up the room but to anchor it. Cynthia Bourgeault has been developing a new form of sacred chant—gentler than Gregorian, easier to learn, yet rooted in the same depth. These chants don’t whip you into fervor. They center you. They entrain your nervous system to rest in God, not react for God.

Because the Kingdom doesn’t come by force. It comes like a seed. Like yeast in dough. Like a whisper in the cave.

And you don’t need a kick drum to hear it.

<iframe src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/wWIHW8vWP3Y?rel=0&autoplay=0&showinfo=0&enablejsapi=0" frameborder="0" loading="lazy" gesture="media" allow="autoplay; their own mystical tradition

There is a certain irony in how modern Orthodox voices critique Centering Prayer. They claim it is foreign to Orthodoxy, untethered from theological tradition, lacking a proper sacramental frame. And yet, the very mystical path they now defend arose from practices far older, wilder, and less systematized than the structures they guard. The silence that shaped Orthodox contemplation was not licensed by theology. It was born in the desert, through raw encounter and release. And the deepest danger now is not in adapting modern forms of silence, but in forgetting the radical origins of their own.

Alek’s Wake-Up Jolts is a reader-powered refuge for soft-hearted seekers and holy troublemakers. The same apophatic theology that Orthodoxy itself claims. And here lies an even deeper irony: you cannot define theology while performing apophatic prayer. The very act of defining becomes cataphatic. The moment you step into explanation, you have already stepped out of the silence.

The Desert Fathers Were Not Systematic Theologians

They didn’t have dogmatic frameworks to “root” their prayer in. They weren’t citing councils. They weren’t building liturgical systems.

They were raw practitioners, forging inner silence in caves, huts, and tombs.

They said things like:

“Go sit in your cell. Your cell will teach you everything." "Prayer is the rejection of thoughts." "Become totally motionless, and you will know God."

That’s not doctrinal clarity—it’s existential fire.

Evagrius Ponticus: The Ghost in the Machine

Evagrius, the most influential source behind hesychasm, was condemned for heresy. Yet his teachings shaped the very system critics now claim is the only valid method.

So let’s be honest:

If you want to throw out Centering Prayer for lacking theological guardrails, you’d also have to toss out the backbone of Orthodox contemplative practice.

You don’t get to praise The Philokalia while denouncing the experiential freedom that gave birth to it.

And let’s be even more honest: the loudest critics have no direct realization or interior experience of the silence they police. Their objections aren’t born of prayer. They’re born of preservation.

Theology Emerged from Practice, Not the Other Way Around

What we now call “Orthodox mysticism” came after the experience. Not before. Not as a gatekeeper.

The Fathers didn’t wait for creeds to meditate in silence. They didn’t ask for permission to stop thinking.

They sat in the dark until the dark cracked open.

The Real Issue

It’s not about theology. It’s about control.

When you criticize Centering Prayer because it doesn’t follow your map, you’re ignoring the fact that the earliest Christians didn’t have one.

They were blazing trails into God, not defending borders.

If the silence they practiced had to be pre-approved by a bishop, there wouldn’t be an Orthodox mystical tradition to protect.

Before you vanish back into the illusion—smash that LIKE or SHARE button like you're breaking open an alabaster jar. It’s an ancient-future recalibration of consciousness, loosely inspired by Nous Ignition Protocols and heavily blessed by renegade saints. Instead of an anchoring prayer, we open with the “Field of Merit”—a silent invocation of those who’ve loved you into being. Yes, you’re allowed to use people who didn’t ghost you after your spiritual awakening. No, you don’t have to use Jesus and Mary. You can call in the Dalai Lama, your therapist, or your dead grandmother who made bomb lasagna. But the energy is the same: unwavering love without condition, the gaze that says, “You were never broken, just disoriented.”

Christian Mysticism Meets Tantra

Mystics like Meister Eckhart, St. Symeon the New Theologian, and St. John of the Cross wrote in ways that sound almost indistinguishable from tantric realization. They didn’t just believe in Christ—they became Christ.

“The eye with which I see God is the same eye with which God sees me.” – Eckhart

Symeon writes about the uncreated light entering him, becoming indistinguishable from his own being. This isn’t metaphor. It’s generation practice without the visual mandala—more of a felt-theosis.

2. Esoteric Christian Traditions

Groups like the Christian Kabbalists, the Hesychasts, and later even the Rosicrucians all touched this idea: that Christ is already within, and the goal is not worship but realization.

In Christian Kabbalah (which you’re already vibing with), Christ is the Tiferet—the harmonic center of the Tree of Life. When you place yourself at that center in practice, you're literally assuming the position of the Logos.

3. Modern Magical Christianity

Some Gnostic and esoteric schools go all the way—openly teaching the practice of generating oneself as the Christ. The inner Christ is awakened through visualization, mantra (the Jesus Prayer in Eastern Orthodoxy is one), and merging of the subtle body with divine light.

There are even groups that practice a "Christ form sadhana"—invoking Christ not as a symbol but as a living emanation to be embodied through light-body work.

4. You Can Create Your Own Christ-Tantra
